Thermal insulating coverings are pre-formed highly refractory models for thermal insulation of heads in classic ingot casting. They are made on the basis of highly refractory fillers, fibres and binders. For special needs and requirements of our customers, we develop and produce INSULATION COVERINGS in insulation or exothermic-insulation quality, adjusted to required shape, dimensions and functionality.

Our thermal insulation products are divided into three groups:

Insulation protective caps are pre-formed refractory coverings that serve as thermal insulation and protection of casting stream in classic ingot mould casting.

The exothermic insulating agent in contact with the melt in the power supply or in the head of the ingot reacts strongly exothermicly. In doing so, heat is released inside the power supply or heads. The residue after burning is highly porous, which ensures good insulating properties. Our exothermic insulating agents are produced in various forms, namely as covers or sprinkles.

EXOTERM develops insulation and protection coverings in shapes, dimensions and functional designs adapted to customer requirements. To prepare a recommendation, please provide:

  • Mould, head or protection-system drawings and actual measurements.
  • Steel grade, ingot mass, pouring temperature and pouring duration.
  • Current materials and application procedure.
  • Installation photographs and a description of the observed problem.
  • Available results for ingot quality, shrinkage cavity depth and head crop.
  • Your objective: quality, yield, material consumption, easier installation or process stability.

Using this information, we can propose a product configuration, trial conditions and criteria for evaluating the result.

HOT TOP insulation rings reduce heat loss from the sides of the ingot head, helping feeding metal remain liquid for longer during solidification.

An appropriately designed insulation and feeding system can help concentrate shrinkage in the head and reduce the required crop. The result depends on geometry, steel grade and casting conditions and should be verified through trial casting.

Head insulation reduces heat loss through the sides of the feeding region. An exothermic cover protects the upper surface, releases heat when activated and leaves an insulating residue. They address complementary heat-loss paths.
