2022

CO-FINANCING OF A DEVELOPMENT PROJECT: DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW SINIMO GRAY IRON FOR BRAKE DISCS AND REFRACTORY WATER-BASED COATING

Project description:

Development of a new gray cast iron (vermicular or nodular) with improved thermal fatigue protection suitable for use on trains reaching speeds of up to 250 km/h and replacement of existing steel cast iron. Consortium partner Exoterm has developed an innovative SOL-GEL coating with a combination of natural and recycled refractory water-based fillers, which will make cores and brake discs made of the new SiNiMo cast iron even more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

DURATION: 11/2022 - 10/2024

TOTAL BUDGET: 705.554,27 €

EU FUNDING: 299.680,41 €

Objectives of the project:

By changing the material of the existing brake plate from cast steel to gray cast iron (SiNiMo), due to the lower density of gray cast iron, we will achieve a reduction in the weight of the product by at least 9%, from 109.3 kg to less than 100 kg. The replacement will be possible based on the improved thermal and mechanical properties of the gray cast iron, which will be comparable to the existing steel cast iron.

The investment is financed by the EU and is part of the Recovery Plan and Negative (NOO) measures, which is the basis for using the funds of the Recovery Mechanism and the potential of NextGenerationEU.
