Thermal insulating materials for steelworks and foundries

Thermal insulating materials for steelworks can be divided into three groups:

1. insulation coverings,

2. cast stream protection coverings,

3. exothermic insulating agents.

They are based on highly refractory ¬fillers, fibers and binders.

Insulation coverings are pre-formed highly refractory models for thermal insulation of heads in classic ingot mold casting in shapes of segmented coverings, rings, plates and inserts. Material can be insulating or exothermic insulating.

Cast stream protection coverings are pre-formed refractory coverings that serve as thermal insulation and protection of casting stream in classic ingot mold casting.

Exothermic insulating agents can be produced in powder form or as solid covers, applied at the top of ingot heads. Products react highly exothermically in contact with melt, dissipating heat to inner side of the ingot head. Residual after burning is highly porous, ensuring good insulation characteristics.

Company EXOTERM-IT is producing all three types of thermal insulating materials. Products can be developed and produced according to special needs and requirements of customers, to obtain required shapes, dimensions and functionality of the products.

Benefits of the use of exothermic insulating materials during ingot casting process

The benefits of the use of exothermic insulating materials during ingot casting process are presented on the animation below. Different insulating products were applied at the top of the mold during teeming and solidification. MAGMASOFT® casting simulation software was used to show the difference between uninsulated (left side of the animation) and insolated mold (right side). The difference is obvious. While uninsulated mold creates deep pipe, the well-insulated mold prevents occurrence of the pipe and create almost flat top surface.

Our refractory coatings

Refractory coatings are applied to sand moulds and cores in foundries (steel castings, grey cast iron and ductile iron, and non-ferrous metals).

Refractory coatings provide a protective barrier between the molten metal and the mould or core substrate during the casting process, ensuring the integrity of the cast surface and preventing defects, such as segregations, burnt-in sand, bulges/recesses and other. They reduce the thermal shock caused by sand substrate and reactions between the substrate and melt, strengthen the mould surface and give smooth surface of castings.

Different applying processes can be used for our coatings – dipping, spraying, pouring and applying with brush – providing flexible use in production processes specific to individual foundry.

Application of SOL-GEL technology in foundry coatings

During steel solidification volumetric contraction occurs inside of an ingot mold, resulting in a cavity know as pipe. To minimize a depth of the pipe insulating materials are applied at the top of the ingot. To form hot top feeder head, insulating or exothermic coverings are used, in the form of plates, rings, segmented plates or pre-shaped form. Further are used exothermic insulating agents at the top of the ingot to protect an open surface of the steel and to keep the ingot head hot. Agents are in the form of powder or plates. The hot top feeder head acts as a reservoir of liquid steel that feeds the lower portion of the ingot, preventing thou the occurrence of the pipe. The left side of the animation shows the effect of applied insulating materials at the top of the mold/ingot, the right side shows the occurrence of the pipe if the ingot head is not isolated.

New control method: Exoprobe

Exothermic-insulating materials are used as auxiliary materials in steel foundries, cast iron foundries, non-ferrous foundries and elsewhere. Materials with exothermic and/or insulating function differ in composition, exothermic effect, insulating ability, ignition temperature, method of manufacture and other properties. For effective use of such materials, the manufacturer should be familiar with thermal properties and experimental techniques to achieve the appropriate characteristics at the manufacturing process.

For the industrial control the device for investigated materials was developed and designed. Using the differential thermal analysis their thermal properties of raw materials and manufactured exothermic-insulating materials are investigated, with an aim to optimize and calibrate of industrial device in EXOTERM-IT d.o.o.

The industrial control method Exoprobe allows planning and development of the exothermic-insulating materials, and the process control of the products. Exoprobe works on the principle of maintaining the fixed temperature state of the heating plate by measuring and controlling the power of the heating elements. From the obtained results the thermal properties of materials are calculated. The method Exoprobe is now regularly used in EXOTERM-IT d.o.o.

New furnace
